Beyond Jeju’s Beaches: Saryeoni Forest, Oreum, and Hiking the Island

Jeju is famous for its coastline, but some of the island’s best scenery is nowhere near the water.

Drive inland and the mood changes quickly.

You start seeing forest roads, low volcanic hills, walking paths, and stretches of green where the island feels much quieter than the beach areas.

This is one of the reasons I recommend renting a car in Jeju if your schedule allows it.

You can use the car to reach a trail, walk for a few hours, then move on without turning the whole day into a transportation problem.

Jeju Has Far More Forest Walking Than Many Visitors Expect

When foreign visitors imagine Jeju, they often picture beaches, cafés, black pork, and Hallasan.

But there are forest paths all over the island, and many places can be enjoyed without paying an entrance fee.

That makes a simple combination possible: rent a car, pick a trail, walk, and stop somewhere else when you feel like it.

Saryeoni Forest Path (사려니숲길, Saryeoni Sup-gil) is one of the better-known examples, but the bigger point is not one specific trail.

Jeju has an inland side that is worth giving an entire day to.

Jeju’s inland forests can feel completely different from its beach areas.

Oreum Are Part of the Jeju Landscape

You will also keep seeing the word volcanic cone (오름, oreum).

Jeju is dotted with these small volcanic hills. Some are easy walks. Others take more effort. The experience is very different from climbing one major mountain all day.

An oreum can give you a short hike, a wide view, and a good reason to get away from the coast for a while.

There are also perimeter and walking trails (둘레길, dulle-gil) that let you spend time in the landscape without making the day a summit mission.

You Do Not Have to Climb Hallasan to Enjoy Jeju on Foot

Hallasan Mountain (한라산, Hallasan) deserves its reputation, and if reaching the summit is important to you, plan for it properly.

But I would not treat Hallasan as the only meaningful hike on the island.

If you prefer a relaxed day, a forest trail, an oreum, or an easier walking route can fit much better into a road trip.

You also get more flexibility if the weather changes.

If You Want the Hallasan Summit, Check the Reservation System Early

This is one part I would not leave until the last minute.

As of September 2026, Hallasan National Park operates an online reservation system for the main summit routes, including Seongpanak (성판악, Seongpanak) and Gwaneumsa (관음사, Gwaneumsa). Availability and trail conditions can change, and popular dates can fill.

The official system says reservations for the following month normally open at 9:00 a.m. on the first working day of the current month.

Before building the rest of your Jeju itinerary around a summit day, check the official Hallasan Visit Reservation System for current availability and trail status.

My Recommendation: Give Jeju’s Interior Its Own Time

If you spend every day following the coast, you will still have a good trip.

But you will miss another side of the island.

There are places inland where the road narrows, the trees take over, and for a while Jeju stops feeling like a beach destination at all.

That is why I like the idea of renting a car and mixing driving with walking.

You do not need every stop to be famous, and you do not need every hike to end at a summit.

Sometimes a free forest path and a few quiet hours are enough.

Next, I’ll go even further away from the “must-see” list and talk about the Jeju stops I remember precisely because they were never on my itinerary.
